The health of your skin starts below the surface. If you have a leak in the basement of your house, you wouldn’t go through the roof to fix it. Anything OTC can legally not penetrate below the dermal layer.
A lot of visible issues we have on our skin, such as acne and breakouts, start below the dermal layer. Topical products can assist in keeping the area clean and reducing inflammation, however, they will have a hard time resolving these issues alone. That’s why it so important to properly hydrate your skin by drinking enough water, taking the appropriate supplements, having a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Hydration
We all know that moisturizing is important for our skin, but moisturizers can only do so much. If you’re not appropriately hydrated, you can put on your skin all the moisturizers in the world, it wouldn’t have the desired effect you’re looking for.
Moisturizers are only as good as the canvas they are put upon, they work symbiotically with the moisture that is already in our skin, by either sealing it in, or amplifying it 1.
Sleep
Our body, skin included, heals and regenerates itself while we sleep. In one study on women at their 40’s, skin hydration was significantly reduced after 1 day of sleep deprivation, and it continued to decrease as sleep quality continued to diminish 2.
It is recommended to get at least 7 consecutive hours of sleep daily. Because it’s imperative for us to get to the deep sleep cycle, this is when our bodies heal themselves and regenerate new cells 3.

Diet and supplements
You may have a glorious skin care routine but you are what you eat, it is widely known that diet majorly impacts all of our bodily systems, skin is no exception 4,5,6.
While it is satisfying to eat junk food all the time, the positive effects are very short lived and outweighed by the negatives. Eat a well-balanced diet, if you’re unable to it’s very important to get your micro nutrients through supplements.
Exercise
When we exercise, it increases our heart rate which stimulates blood flow, and drives oxygen throughout the body. It induces sweating, detoxifying our bodies and skin. Exercise also produces hormones that help stimulate cell regeneration, preserves skin hydration and promotes more restful sleep 7,8.
Try to be active at least 45 minutes a day. That doesn’t mean you have to go lift weights at the gym every day, it can be as simple as taking a walk, swim, or a yoga class. Whichever fits your lifestyle best.

Exposure
Elements outside of our bodies have a major impact on our skin’s health. UV exposure can be one of the most damaging external impacts we face 9.
It is a common misconception that UV exposure is exclusive to the sun, however, it is around us all the time, from our TVs, laptops, phone screens, etc. This is why wearing sunscreen every day is absolutely necessary, even if you’re not in the sun.
We are all exposed to pollution on a daily basis, these particles can clog our pores, dry out our skin, and inundate us with free radicals. Because of this exposure it’s important to mitigate it by having a good skincare routine that cleanses these impurities and combats the free radicals.
Stress
Stress has a major impact on all of our organs, skin included 10. When we’re stressed our body’s systems go into distress, and our systems aren’t operating optimally, that can wreak havoc on our skin in multitude of ways. Stress deregulates hormonal balance, digestion, immune system, heart rhythm, blood flow, cellular turnover and production, sleep, energy level, etc.
If you’re stressed utilize tools that work best for you to help alleviate it.
IN CONCLUSION
These are factors that have major impacts on the health of our skin, and overall body. When we keep hydrated, eat right, get quality sleep, exercise, mitigate exposure, and manage our stress our bodies thank us and it shows in our skin.
That being said – research suggests while these factors make a huge impact on our skin’s health, nourishing and stimulating cell turn-over with powerful and effective skin care routine will also have a significant impact 4.
